Senate rejects nuclear freeze

In a major victory for President Reagan, the Senate killed a proposal Monday night calling for a nuclear weapons freeze with the Soviet Union and signaled its support for the nuclear ''build-down'' he supports.

In its first vote on the highly controversial issue, the Republican-led Senate voted 58-40 to kill the mutual and verifiable nuclear freeze proposal offered by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D) of Mass.
