Postgrad schooling at record high

Even a PhD doesn't spell J-O-B in today's tight employment market, and that fact has helped swell the number of postdoctoral students to record highs. According to a new study, about 30 percent of the new PhDs in the sciences and engineering in 1981 decided to continue their education, three times the number that did so on 1960. The author of the study, however, William Zumeta, senior research associate at the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, sees the number of postdoctoral students eventually declining.
