New strategies

Republicans in the United States are worried about the coming election campaign, so they have decided to regroup. That is another way of saying that their old strategy, whatever it was, isn't working, and they have to think up a new strategy. Which no doubt will be the old strategy, regrouped.

All this regrouping has not been caused by any brilliant Democratic strategy. Mostly it is just sulky, anti-Reagan Republicans who are wondering if Reagan could be worse than a Democrat.

It is the political fashion in America now for everyone to form into groups. The reason things got started in this direction is that no matter what happens someone raises the cry of either sexism or racism.

The problem is that it becomes hard for a politician to speak the English language as he knows it. At present there are three main groups that give trouble to President Reagan: women, blacks, and labor. It can be perplexing, even to a president, to realize that the women's group apparently does not include blacks or workers, and that the black group doesn't incude workers or women. Otherwise, why would anyone need a group? And if you include Hispanics, it only gets more complicated.

But all this is being worked out in typical American fashion, starting with the labor group. The administration claims there are more jobs than ever. They are being given to robots instead of people, however, and that should end sexist attitudes once and for all.

As for actors, jobs in TV commercials now go to cats and dogs, with a lot of secondary parts for cougars, eagles, and various bugs. They seem to do quite well. Animated creatures of different sorts manage much better than people to sell cookies and cereal because no one gives a hoot about the sex or color of a cookie elf.

But one horrible fact remains to puzzle Republicans: People will have to keep some sort of discrimination in order to choose Republicans instead of Democrats.

Or, heaven forbid, the other way around!
