Two US women attempt summit of Mt. Everest

A former US Air Force nurse and a Yosemite park ranger will attempt this week to become the first American women to climb the summit of Mt. Everest. The Nepalese Tourism Ministry said Tuesday that Annie Whitehouse of Albuquerque, N.M., and Anne MacQuarie of Berkeley, Calif., both veteran climbers of the Nepalese Himalayas, were chosen to attempt the climb with two men from their team. The climbers are from a 14-member expedition from Yosemite National Park. Only four women have ever scaled Mt. Everest.
