Union chief's kin found guilty of embezzlement

Former Teamsters official Allen Friedman, the uncle of union president Jackie Presser, was convicted Wednesday by a federal court jury of embezzling $165,000 from Mr. Presser's home local. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, but an appeal is planned.

The government charged that Mr. Friedman, who was president of Cleveland Teamsters Local 752 in 1976, struck a deal with Presser to merge 752 with Local 507. As a payoff, Friedman received a $1,000-a-week salary and a promise that he did not have to work, the government said. The verdict could have implications for Presser, who is a target of a federal investigation into ''ghost workers'' at Local 507, where he is still secretary-treasurer.
