Southern Pacific to merge with Santa Fe Industries

Santa Fe Industries and the Southern Pacific Company announced Tuesday they had agreed in principle to merge. In 1982, the companies reported assets totaling nearly $10.25 billion and combined operating revenues of over $6 billion, which means one merged company would be the largest diversified transportation enterprise in the United States. The new company will be called the Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corporation.
