Lebanese Druse leader meets McFarlane

Lebanese Druse leader Walid Jumblatt met Sunday with US Middle East envoy Robert McFarlane and French officials on the impending entry of the Lebanese Army into the Shouf Mountains, according to a spokesman.

Mr. Jumblatt, Mr. McFarlane, and Wadie Haddad, Lebanese President Amin Gemayel's national security adviser, arrived in Paris Saturday and held separate meetings to attempt securing a peaceful move for the Lebanese Army. Diplomatic sources said Jumblatt held a secret meeting with Mr. Haddad, but Jumblatt denied he had held any talks with the Lebanese national security adviser.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting broke out Sunday around Beirut International Airport between the Lebanese Army and Shiite Muslim militiamen, with mortars and gunfire reportedly flying over US marine positions.
