Some summer ideas for using microwaves

If you're among the millions of people who have a microwave oven, you might like some of these ideas for summer cooking from Janet Felmeth, director of the Westinghouse-Kelvinator Home Economics Institute.

Fresh vegetables are tender and flavorful when prepared in a microwave. Usually the cooking time at the ''high'' setting is only 6 to 10 minutes per pound.

Fish and seafood taste especially good when cooked in a microwave. Poaching or steaming cooking techniques are readily adaptable to your oven.

For a different twist, cover or wrap the fish with lettuce leaves. This holds in the steam and bastes the fish. Salmon steaks cooked this way are extra good.

Pies may be baked in a hurry in both microwave and conventional ovens. In microwaves, put fresh 9-inch pies on ''high'' for 10 to 12 minutes or until juices begin to bubble through the slits. Then put them in a conventional oven, preheated to 425 degrees F. for an additional 10 to 12 minutes to complete baking and brown the crust.
