Parts of Sri Lanka placed on curfew as riots erupt

The Sri Lankan government imposed a 15-hour curfew on Colombo and several other parts of the country as mobs went on the rampage, setting fire to shops, houses, and vehicles. Three people were killed in the violence.

The rioting erupted when news of the killing of 13 Sri Lankan soldiers in Jaffna, 240 miles north of Colombo, reached the capital. The soldiers died in a guerrilla ambush Saturday reportedly set by rebels from the Tamil minority, who are fighting for a seperate state.
