Polish leaders seem ready to lift martial law soon

Polish primate Jozef Cardinal Glemp said he expects martial law to be lifted next week - and an amnesty for political prisoners declared. Cardinal Glemp made the remarks on his return from talks with the Pope in Vatican City.

Meanwhile, Poland's state-run media gave the strongest signal yet that martial law will be lifted this month. The newspaper Zycie Warszawy said an appeal to the government to end martial law made by the Patriotic Movement for National Rebirth was likely to be accepted by the authorities.
