Big American retail stores report June sales surge

The nation's major retail chains reported sales surged an average 10 to 20 percent in June, the strongest gain this year. The spurt in June sales was attributed to growing consumer confidence in the economy; hot weather boosting the sale of summer clothing, air conditioners, and other seasonal merchandise; and comparisons against depressed sales figures of a year ago.
