Warsaw — Lech Walesa said he would not step down as leader of the fight for union rights in Poland. He called on the authorities Sunday to look again at agreements that gave birth to the banned Solidarity union three years ago.
Interviewed by ABC television and the British television company ITN, Walesa was responding to a recent editorial in the semi-official Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, which appeared to write him off as a force in Poland. The author of the editorial, the Rev. Virgilio Levi, an experienced Vatican journalist, since resigned from the paper.
