So she didn't win. Cambodian refugee Linn Yann came close enough in that big Tennessee spelling bee to put many a native English speaker to shame. After all, she didn't know any English when she came to America in 1979. Now she's a fifth-grader star getting called up by the President.

It was nice of him to offer congratulations even though Linn fell down on what must have been an easy one for any president who serves Mexican food to the Queen of Great Britain. No, no, not ''refried beans.'' It was ''enchilada'' that stuck on Linn's tongue. We don't know about the Queen.
