Lebanese troops extend their sway to east Beirut

Lebanese government troops took over security duties in east Beirut, the first time the government has controlled the whole city in eight years. Christian militiamen have policed east Beirut since the civil war of 1975-76, but agreed not to patrol in military vehicles, wear uniforms, or carry weapons. Occupying the city's eastern part was regarded as a crucial test for President Amin Gemayel, whose effective power has not extended beyond west Beirut since he took office in September.
