In an unexpected move, the Republican National Committee acted quickly Jan. 28 to shut off would-be GOP rivals and unanimously endorsed President Reagan and Vice-President George Bush for reelection. Sen. Paul Laxalt of Nevada was installed as general chairman and Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., also of Nevada, became chairman of the GOP.
