Got an extra $5,046.69 lying around? Has Uncle Sam got a charity for you!

For the first time, the IRS is trumpeting the fact that you can make a voluntary contribution to help pay the national debt. In exchange, you'll get to include the payment when you calculate deductions for charitable contributions on your 1983 income tax return. For details, see the IRS commissioner's annual missive to the taxpaying masses inside the packet you've just received from the IRS. Could Uncle Sam use the help! The national debt is about $1.143 trillion - or $5,046.69 for every man, woman, and child.

In '82, the feds received $923,000 in contributions. Half came from interest on a trust fund someone set up to help the government.m
