For the first time, the IRS is trumpeting the fact that you can make a voluntary contribution to help pay the national debt. In exchange, you'll get to include the payment when you calculate deductions for charitable contributions on your 1983 income tax return. The national debt is about $1.143 trillion - or $5,046.69 for every man, woman, and child.

In '82, the feds received $923,000 in contributions. Half came from interest on a trust fund someone set up to help the government.m
