Polish prelate visits Rome for urgent talks with Pope

Polish Archbishop Jozef Glemp arrived in Rome Monday for urgent consultations with Pope John Paul II on the crisis in Poland.

The primate, who refused to meet with Polish leader Wojciech Jaruzelski because of the ban on Solidarity, said he will set ''conditions'' for talks after his return from Rome Nov. 4.

Talking to reporters after his arrival, Archbishop Glemp said he viewed the situation in Poland a bit more pessimistically than he did when he returned home in July after his last talks with the Pope. But he added that church-state relations had not collapsed entirely.

Poland's Communist Party Central Committee and parliament meet this week to assess public response to Solidarity's banning.
