Salazar wins his third New York City marathon

Cuban-born Alberto Salazar put on a final quarter-mile surge Sunday to pull ahead of Mexico's Rodolfo Gomez and win the New York City Marathon for the third straight year in 2:09.29.

Gomez, who finished second to Salazar two years ago here, was second in 2:09. 33. American Dan Schlesinger was third. Norway's Grete Waitz won the women's division in 2:27.14.
