Tips for cleaning carpets

Did you ever wonder what caused that spot on your carpet and how you can remove it? Most carpet problems are generally easy to correct if you take the proper action.

Questions on carpet care and maintenance are answered in two booklets published by the Carpet and Rug Institute, the national trade association that represents carpet and rug manufacturers.

''The Carpet and Rug Care Guide'' covers such topics as regular care, home-cleaning methods, professional cleaning, distributing carpet wear, extending the life of a stairway carpet, and how to keep carpets from fading.

''Chemical Spots and Stains on Carpet and Rugs'' was published in response to the increasing use of chemical products in the home. Unlike most common household accidents, chemical spills can cause permanent damage to carpets. Increased caution when using products such as drain cleaners, bleaches, and insecticides can prevent many problems.

To order both booklets, send $1 and a self-addressed, stamped (40) envelope to The Carpet and Rug Institute, P.O. Box 2048, Dalton, Ga. 30720.
