Detroit teachers strike, but schools remain open

Detroit's 11,000 teachers went on strike Monday, angered by a school board demand for concessions, but school officials told the 200,000 students involved to report to class anyway. Teachers in seven other Michigan districts also struck.

Almost 200,000 other students stayed home because of teacher walkouts in four states, though at least three major strikes - in Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania - were settled.
