Irish minister resigns over his tie to murder suspect

Prime Minister Charles Haughey, struggling to save his shaky minority government, accepted the resignation of Attorney General Patrick Connolly.

Mr. Connolly claimed he unwittingly housed double-murder suspect Malcolm MacArthur, saying he offered Mr. MacArthur, a family friend, a place to stay in Dublin for business purposes.

The resignation appeared to have eased a political crisis started by opposition leaders, according to Haughey aides.
