US officials won't appeal release of 1,800 Haitians

The Justice Department said it would not ask the Supreme Court to delay a lower court order releasing about 1,800 Haitians being held in detention as illegal aliens.

The department said it would continue to enforce the law by apprehending and detaining any aliens trying to enter the United States illegally. Florida officials want most of the Haitian refugees to be resettled outside the state, which is already crowded with Caribbean refugees. They expect the first of the detained Haitians to be released within two weeks.
