Solidarity calls for protest halt in bid for papal visit

The underground Solidarity union called Saturday for a 12-day halt to all protests against martial law, hoping to convince military rulers to let Pope John Paul II visit in August.

Polish authorities have hinted that demonstrations against martial law this summer could jeopardize the papal visit.
