A GOP balanced budget is turned back in House

The Democratic-controlled House defeated, 242 to 182, a conservative Republican plan for a balanced 1983 budget and continued to search for a plan it could support.

Democrats branded the balanced budget proposed by John Rousselot (R) of California as unrealistic.

Three alternative budgets remain to be considered by the House, which hopes to settle later this week on a plan to encourage lower interest rates.
