Consumers hang on to confidence

US consumer confidence held steady in April, following two monthly dips in a row - but buying plans dropped sharply, the Conference Board reports.

''Despite the pervasive gloom about current conditions, the fact that confidence in the future has held up as well as it has suggests consumers could speed up a business recovery,'' says Fabian Linden, executive director of the board.
