Lisbon violence puts Cabinet on the spot

Pressure on Portugal's right-wing government intensified as opposition parties called for the resignation of Interior Minister Angelo Correia over the deaths of two youths in May Day clashes with police. The Socialist Party, which has remained silent in the controversy over the riots between the government and the Communist-led labor union federation, said the police acted uncontrollably and brutally.
