Soviets launch space unit to replace Salyut 6 and US picks woman and black for spaceflights

The first woman and the first black astronauts to be selected for a US space mission have been named by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Dr. Sally Ride, an astrophysicist, was selected for the crew of the seventh shuttle flight, scheduled for next April. Guion Bluford, a former Air Force fighter pilot, was chosen for the eighth shuttle flight in July of nest year.
