A major shake-up in Sudan's political leadership is taking place following student riots earlier this month.

President Jaafar al-Nimeiri fired his first vice-president and defense minister, Abdel-Magid Hamid Khalil, as part of the change. It came after criticism about the handling of student riots in which several people were killed after protesting price increases stemming from a government economic austerity program.
