Rollie Fingers of Milwaukee has become the first relief pitcher to win the American League Most Valuable Player award, adding this honor to the Cy Young Award which he captured earlier, Monitor sports editor Larry Eldridge reports. The ace right-hander, who went 6-3 with a 1.04 earned-run average and a league-leading 28 saves, edged Oakland outfielder Rickey Henderson in an unusually close MVP vote by baseball writers. The only other reliever to win an MVP award was the National League's Jim Konstanty of Philadelphia in 1950.
