Banjul, Senegambia — The two west African nations of Senegal and The Gambia have united in a confederation called Senegambia. Abdou Diouf, President of Senegal, becomes president of the Senegambia and Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, President of The Gambia, is vice-president of the confederation.
Gambia has never had an army in its eleven years of independence from Britiain. But it only took two pleas for military intervention from Senegal in less than year to convince Sir Dawda that his country's safety was best assured by a formal alliance with his neighbor. Senegal helped foil a coup attempt less than four months ago.
