Low demand resulted in an increase in US gasoline inventories in the week ended Aug. 21, a period when supplies are usually low because of vacation driving, the American Petroleum Institute says.

The institute, an oil industry trade group, said stocks rose to 236.5 millino barrels daily in the latest week, from 233.6 billion barrels a week earlier, but remained below last year's inventories of 258.8 million barrels.

Industry sources said the rise was due to increased production amid continued soft demand.
