Where will the planned Soviet-West European gas pipeline start and what route will it travel? Some of the mystery is clearing. A brief item on Moscow Radio has stated that the planned link -- "more than 4,500 kilometers" (some 2,700 miles) in length -- will start from Urengoi in western Siberia and link up with two existing export pipelines in the western Ukraine. Many Western news reports had been referring to the envisaged gas links as the "Yamal pipeline," placing its starting point on the YAmal Peninsula more than 200 miles northwest of Urengoi.
"Surveying work has begun . . . fo r the pipeline," Moscow Radio added.m
