Airline, dock strikes averted in Poland

In twin victories for the nation's newly elected Communist leadership, strikes by the Polish state airline, LOT, and by 40,000 dockworkers were averted. Airline negotiators agreed to call off a planned Friday strike after receiving a letter from Prime Minister Wojciech Jaruzelski promising them a say in choosing the airline's director, a post with close l inks to the armed forces.
