New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority OK'd a rise in bus and subway fares to 75 cents today (July 3). The fare will jump to $1 July 18 unless the Legislature approves a bailout plan for the deficit-ridden system. The board also approved a two-stage increase in commuter rail fares. Rail fares will rise 25 percent July 15 and another 25 percent Aug. 12 if the Legislature fails to act.
