Afghan guerrillas set fire to the Soviet air base north of Kabul last week, detonating ammunition and fuel and forcing Russian jet fighters and helicopters to flee the flames, a Western diplomat said. The attack was one of several incidents marking the anniversary of the death of Abdul Najib Kalakani. Afghan authorities executed Kalakani last year because his 3,000-strong rebel band -- the Sama -- was assassinati ng Russians and had roused the people of Kabul to rise up.
