Former New Hebrides applies for UN seat

Vanuatu, formerly the New Hebrides, has applied for membership in the United Nations. It will become the 155th member if the General Assembly approves the application on the recommendation of the Security Council. The southern Pacific island state was formerly administered under an Anglo-French condominium.
