Two Monitor writers honored by press group

Two Monitor staff writers, Emilie Tavel Livezey and Maggie Lewis, have been selected as winners by the New England Woman's Press Association in its 1981 awards competition.

Mrs. Livezey is the group's "newswoman of the year" on the basis of her writing in general and specifically for her articlE, "Bringing a ship to life," which appeared in the special pullout section for the week of dec. 8-12. The award is presented in the name of Eleanor R. Collier, a writer, editor, teacher, and past president of the association. Mrs. Livezey was a finalist in the same category in 1979.

Miss Lewis is the recipient of the group's Magazine Journalist Award for her article "must your whites really be whiter?" It appeared in the special pullout section for the week of Oct. 13-17. She also was a runner-up in the association's 1979 competition.

Other honors announced by the New England Woman's Press Association include: the Marjorie Mills Award, to Joan Oleck of the Lowell (mass.) Sun for the greatest contribution to the woman's community through the woman's/living pages of her newspaper; the Best Series Award, to Judy Foreman of the Boston Globe; the Best Columnist Award, to Marsha Howland of the Salem (mass.) Evening News; the Best Sportswriter Award, to Leslie Visser of the Boston Globe; and the Student Journalist Award, to Maria Riccardi of Syracuse University, an intern at the Boston Globe.

The awards are scheduled to be presented in Boston May 22.
