The Japanese and US Armies plan to hold their first joint maneuvers in the autumn as part of increased cooperation because of the Soviet military buildup in the Far East. Japan's Navy and Air Force have already conducted joint exercises with the US Navy and Air Force, but the use of ground forces is a political step forward in US-Japanese efforts to incre ase military cooperation.
