$1.6 million Burnett ruling against National enquirer

Comedienne-actress Carol Burnett received $1.6 million in damages in a libel suit against the National Enquirer, which could lead to a flow of similar suits against the weekly.After deliberating for 13 hours, the jury of six women and five men awarded Miss Burnett, who was the star of a long-running television series, $1.3 million in punitive damages and $300,000 in general damages.

Miss Burnett had complained about an article, published five years ago, that implied she was boisterously intoxicated in a Washington restaurant.
