S&Ls allowed to cross state lines for mergers

The Federal Home Loan Bank Board has voted to let savings and loan associations go across state lines and acquire ailing thrift institutions to forestall possible closings, the Wall Street Journal reports. The thrift industry has been battered by high interest rates and competition from money-mar ket funds, prompting the board's action.
