Since 1965 the number of course offerings in film and television on US campuses grew exponentially, from a handful mostly in the New York and Los Angeles areas to almost every institution of higher learning in the country and to many secondary schools.

The 1980 "American Film Institute Guide to College Courses in Film and Television," the seventh edition published by Peterson's Guides, lists nearly 600 institutions offering 7,648 graduate and undergraduate course listings in film and TV. Selections vary from the extensive program offered by the giant University of Southern California to individual program at tiny Marlboro College in Vermont.
