Getting smoke stains from stone fireplace

Q. My living-room limestone fireplace has been darkened by smoke stains. How can it be cleaned? Ray Edward Weimar La Crosse, Wis.

A. There are various commercial cleaners on the market shelf which are designed to remove smoke stains from masonry. Check them out at your local paint, hardware, or janitorial supply store. Follow the labeled directions to the letter.

One such product is Sure Klean Heavy Duty Paint Stripper which is made by ProSoCo, Inc., 1040 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. 66104.

The company also makes a product called Sure Klean Limestone Restorer, which can b e applied to the cleaned stone to make it look like new.
