Turkey frees 4 Americans for transfer to US prisons

Turkey released four American prisoners jailed here since 1973 for drug smuggling and they were flown to West Germany under a Turkish-US prisoner transfer treaty, officials said.

The prisoners, two men and two women who were sentenced to 24 year's imprisonment in 1973 for smuggling 233 pounds of hashish into Turkey, will serve the rest of their terms in American prisons. The four prisoner's final destination in the United States was not known. Under the prisoner transfer treaty, which went into effect last month, Turkish and American prisoners can serve their terms in their own countries.

Seven Turks imprisoned in the US are expected to be retu rned to Turkey under the treaty.
