Afghan rebels raid area where Soviet families live

Anticommunist guerrillas in Afghanistan have raided a residential area of Soviet families in Kabul, the capital, dealing a psychological blow to the government and its Soviet ally, US officials said. The officials said the successful attack, from which the rebels escaped in good order, demonstrated that Soviet efforts to crush the antigovernment forces have not succeeded, even in the Afghan capital. Recent Soviet offensives aimed at clearing the Kabul area of rebel forces "apparently just whet the guerrillas' appetites," one offic ial said.
