Chinese backs US ties -- with no Taiwan shift

Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang has urged President Reagan to improve US-Chinese relations, but warned that any change in the status of Taiwan would be a serious setback. In his first news conference outside China since taking office last September, Mr. Zhao said that the status of Taiwan as an inseparable part of China was the basic principle in the resumption of diplomatic relations under former President Carter two years ago.

He also rejected as a propaganda ploy a Vietnamese suggestion for a conference restricted to Southeast Asian nations instead of a wider international conference on Ca mbodia.
