Workers at the BL (British Leyland) car company's biggest plant voted to accept a pay increase of 6.8 percent, virtually ensuring a companywide OK of the offer and avoiding a crippling strike. The vote, by 10,000 workers at the Longbridge plant in Birmingham, was about 60 to 40 in favor of the offer. It is seen as a victory in the government's effort to hold down raises as part of its anti-inflation fight.
