The Senate Finance Committee reported out without recommendation a $4.1 billion superfund bill to clean up toxic waste dumps such as Love Canal. Chairman Russell Long (D) of Louisiana said a compromise between the Senate bill and less-stringent House legislation will have to be fought out on the Senate floor if toxic waste cleanup and oil spill legislation is to be passed before time runs out in this session of Congress.
