Prospects grow stronger for Arab summit meeting

Prospects that the Arab summit meeting will go ahead as planned improved after an unexpectedly smooth meeting of an Arab League committee. Barring unforeseen developments, the 11th Arab summit will be held Nov. 25. The committee -- foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Algeria and a representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization -- had been asked to draw up a common Arab economic and political strategy in the face of "continued Israeli aggressions." There had been fears the meeting would degenerate into an exchange of recriminations. But Jordan's foreign minister, Marwan al- Qassem, and Arab League Secretary- General Chedli Klibi managed to steer delegates away from discussing the Gulf war and other Arab differences.
