Star-Map

Migrating birds across the midnight sky Bear in their bird-brains southward as they fly Star-maps coded down the lines Since first Orion pierced the serpent spines Of pterodactyls, and the starlight shone Down in the swamp and winged the thrashing bone. Strands of wild birds transfix the night and cry; The autumn constellations stand on high; Far to the eastward Taurus slants his horn, And to the south the spear of Capricon points toward the tropics. Blackbirds ride the night Guided by instinct, that abiding light out of the swamplands, All that starry chart The subtle, bat-winged lizard learned by heart.
