Getting oil stains off hardwood floors

Q. Is there some way of removing large oil stains from hardwood floors? The oil came from an electronic organ speaker. Margaret L. Turner Palo Alto, Calif.

A. Apply Sure Klean liquid fireplace cleaner, made by ProSoCo Inc., Kansas City, Kan., or its equal. One of the company's officials say it may be necessary to obtain some fuller's earth, making paste of it with the liquid cleaner noted above.

Used as a poultice, the paste should remove the stains caused by dripped oil from that misbehaving speaker.

You can obtain fuller's earth from a large hardware or building material store.

Fuller's earth is a naturally occurring earthly substance that resembles potter's clay but lacks plasticity, according to Webster's. It is often used as an absorbent.
